Fringe follows a Federal Bureau of Investigation “Fringe Division” team that is based in Boston under the supervision of Homeland Security. The team uses unorthodox “fringe” science and FBI investigative techniques in order to investigate a number of unexplained occurrences. Each of these occurrences all relate back to mysteries surrounding a parallel universe.
The show, which airs on Fridays at 9pm EST on the Fox network, premiered in North America on September 9, 2008. The pilot episode received a 3.2/9 Nielson ratings among adults 18-49 with 9.13 million viewers tuning in. By the second episode 13.27 million people were watching, making it the 5th most watched show of the week. And by October, it was first place among new shows in the 18-49 demographic.
As the show follows the Fringe Division, the team is led by Agent Olivia Dunham, Doctor Walter Bishop, and Walter’s estranged son Peter Bishop. The division investigates a number of cases relating to fringe science ranging from tranhumanist experiments gone wrong to a destructive technological singularity advanced biotechnology that has been developed by a company called Massive Dynamic.
While complex at times, Fringe is the perfect sci-fi television series for people interested in this genre. It is appealing, alluring, and never disappoints as can be seen through high ratings week after week.
